Cannabis Etiquette: 10 Rules Every Patient Should Know
Rolling Stoned
Whether you're a new patient or a seasoned user, knowing the unwritten rules of cannabis etiquette makes the experience better for everyone.
There Are Rules. They Just Aren't Written Down.
The cannabis community has developed its own social norms over decades — a kind of unspoken code that makes sharing and consuming cannabis a more thoughtful, respectful experience for everyone involved.
Whether you're new to the medical program or just want to brush up, here are the 10 golden rules.
1. Know Your Dose Before Social Situations
Nothing kills the vibe faster than someone greening out in public because they underestimated an edible. Before attending a social gathering where cannabis will be present, know your tolerance and stick to it. This isn't just about you — it affects the experience for everyone around you.
2. Puff, Puff, Pass (Don't Bogart)
The timeless rule. When sharing a joint or bowl, take your hit (or two) and pass it along. Holding onto it while you tell a long story is called "bogarting" — and it's universally frowned upon.
3. Don't Pressure Anyone
Cannabis is medical and personal. Never pressure anyone to consume — not even in a joking way. Some people are sober for medical reasons, some are on probation, some just don't want to. Respect it without comment.
4. Corner the Bowl
When smoking from a shared bowl, use your lighter to ignite just the edge (corner) of the packed herb rather than lighting the whole top. This preserves the "green hit" (the first, freshest hit) for everyone in rotation, not just the first person.
5. BYOC (Bring Your Own Cannabis)
If you're attending a session, it's good form to contribute. If someone is always providing and you never bring anything, that's noticed — and not appreciated. When in doubt, ask what's needed.
6. Don't Exhale on People
This should go without saying — but exhale away from faces. Even among smokers, no one wants a cloud of smoke blown at them. Step aside, exhale downward or upwind.
7. Respect Public Spaces and Non-Smokers
Florida medical cannabis is for licensed patients only, and public consumption is illegal. Always consume in private spaces. Be especially mindful around:
- Children and playgrounds
- Non-consenting adults
- Restaurants, shops, and public events
- Your neighbors' open windows
8. Don't Drive High
This is non-negotiable. Driving while impaired by cannabis is illegal in Florida, dangerous, and puts lives at risk. Plan ahead: use rideshares, designate a driver, or consume only when you're already home for the evening.
9. Be Honest About What You're Sharing
If you're offering someone cannabis — especially an edible — be clear about:
- The THC content
- Whether it's been tested
- What strain or product it is
Never give someone cannabis without their knowledge. That's not just bad etiquette — it's assault.
10. Clean Up After Yourself
Ash, roach ends, empty packaging, and vape cartridges are litter. Dispose of everything properly. This is especially important outdoors and at public-adjacent spaces.
The Spirit Behind the Rules
Ultimately, cannabis etiquette comes down to one principle: be considerate. Think about the people around you — those who consume and those who don't — and act accordingly. The cannabis community has worked hard to shift public perception, and every responsible consumer helps that cause.
