With roughly 19,000–22,000 Sarasota County residents now holding medical marijuana cards and around 30 dispensary storefronts operating across Sarasota and Manatee counties, the Gulf Coast's cultural capital has quietly become one of Florida's most active cannabis markets.

Why Sarasota Has Become a Cannabis Hotspot

Sarasota has long been celebrated for its world-class beaches, thriving arts scene, and affluent retiree community. But over the past few years, a quieter revolution has been unfolding along the Tamiami Trail and across the broader Gulf Coast region — one measured not in gallery openings or real estate records, but in dispensary storefronts and medical marijuana cards.

According to a recent report by Sarasota Magazine, approximately 19,000 to 22,000 Sarasota County residents held active medical marijuana cards in 2025. That figure, drawn from Florida's Office of Medical Marijuana Use, represents a substantial share of the county's roughly 430,000 residents — and it places Sarasota among the most engaged medical cannabis communities in the state.

A Market Built on Medicine

Florida's medical marijuana program, launched after voters approved Amendment 2 in 2016 with over 71% support, has grown steadily every year since. By the end of Q4 2025, the state had 929,665 active qualified patients statewide — nearly one million Floridians legally accessing cannabis for medical purposes.

The qualifying conditions list is broad and reflects the realities of Florida's population. Patients can qualify with diagnoses including:

  • Chronic pain and muscle spasms
  • PTSD and anxiety disorders
  • Cancer and its treatment side effects
  • Epilepsy and seizure disorders
  • Parkinson's disease and ALS
  • Crohn's disease and other GI conditions
  • Glaucoma, HIV/AIDS, and Alzheimer's disease

Sarasota's demographics are a key driver of that local demand. The county skews older — with one of the highest concentrations of retirees in the United States — and older patients are among the fastest-growing segments of medical cannabis users nationally. Conditions like chronic pain, arthritis, sleep disorders, and neurological diseases that are common in aging populations all qualify under Florida law.

30 Storefronts and Counting

The patient demand hasn't gone unnoticed by operators. Across Sarasota and Manatee counties, there are now approximately 30 dispensary storefronts — a number that would have seemed unthinkable just five years ago.

The roster includes both national giants and locally-rooted brands:

  • Trulieve, Florida's largest operator with over 170 locations statewide, maintains a flagship Sarasota location on N. Beneva Road and handles significant daily foot traffic.
  • Curaleaf, another national leader, serves patients near the UTC corridor.
  • MÜV operates two Sarasota locations — one downtown on Main Street and one on Fruitville Road — targeting both downtown visitors and east-side residents.
  • Mint Cannabis, honored as Florida's Most Innovative Medical Cannabis Dispensary, has opened locations in both Sarasota (South Tamiami Trail) and Bradenton (14th St W), drawing patients with aggressive new-patient deals and extended hours.
  • Cookies – Bradenton, the Florida outpost of the legendary California brand, has quickly become one of the highest-rated dispensaries in the region, boasting a 4.9-star rating and over 1,000 Google reviews.
  • Planet 13 – Bradenton brings its Vegas-rooted premium dispensary concept to Cortez Road, offering a wide selection under its in-house brands like Medizin and Leaf & Vine.
  • GrowHealthy, AYR Cannabis, Eden Florida, and others round out a competitive and diverse market.

Florida has grown from just 24 dispensaries statewide in 2017 to 738 licensed locations in 2025 — and the Sarasota/Manatee corridor has captured a meaningful piece of that expansion.

Why Sarasota Specifically?

Several factors have converged to make Sarasota a particularly fertile ground for cannabis growth:

1. An Older, Health-Conscious Population

Sarasota consistently ranks as one of the best places to retire in America. That senior-skewing demographic doesn't just create demand — it creates informed demand. Many older patients are turning to cannabis as an alternative to opioids, benzodiazepines, and other pharmaceuticals with significant side effects. Local dispensaries report that flower, tinctures, and topicals are especially popular with this demographic.

2. High Household Income

Sarasota County has a median household income well above the state average, and cannabis is not an inexpensive habit. Premium products, concentrates, and delivery services all find a receptive market here. Dispensaries have responded by stocking high-end offerings — live rosin, single-source concentrates, premium indoor flower — alongside budget-friendly options.

3. Tourism and Seasonal Residents

Sarasota's tourist economy also plays a role. Snowbirds who have cards in their home states — or who establish Florida residency for part of the year — contribute to seasonal demand spikes. With beaches, cultural events, and warm winters drawing visitors from across the country, dispensaries see notable upticks between November and April.

4. A Tolerant Local Culture

Unlike some of Florida's more conservative inland communities, Sarasota has historically leaned toward a live-and-let-live social ethos. The arts community, a sizable LGBTQ+ population, and a progressive urban core around downtown and St. Armands have helped normalize cannabis as a wellness product rather than a stigmatized substance.

5. Proximity to Bradenton's Growth

The Sarasota market doesn't exist in isolation. Manatee County — home to Bradenton — has seen its own dispensary boom, and the two metros function as a single economic corridor. Patients freely cross county lines, and operators like Mint Cannabis and Cookies have smartly planted flags in both markets.

The Competitive Landscape

With 30-plus storefronts competing for roughly 20,000 local cardholders, the Sarasota/Manatee cannabis market is intensely competitive — and that's great news for patients.

Dispensaries are fighting for loyalty with:

  • Aggressive new-patient deals: 50–60% off first visits are now standard across most major chains.
  • Loyalty rewards programs: Curaleaf Rewards, TruRewards, and Mint's member deals all offer returning patients meaningful savings.
  • Extended hours: Mint Cannabis Sarasota operates Monday–Friday 8AM–8:45PM, catering to working patients who can't visit during traditional business hours.
  • Online ordering and delivery: Nearly every major operator now offers order-ahead and home delivery, reducing barriers for patients with mobility issues.
  • Educational budtenders: Operators are investing in staff training, recognizing that Sarasota's patient base often arrives with specific health goals and questions.

Pricing has also become more accessible. What once cost $50–$60 per eighth for mid-tier flower can now be found for $15–$25 during promotions, and competitive pressure has pushed everyday prices down across the board.

What's Next

Florida's cannabis future remains in flux. Amendment 3 — which would have legalized recreational adult-use cannabis — narrowly failed to reach the required 60% threshold in November 2024, falling short at approximately 56%. That means Florida remains a medical-only state for now, though advocates say another ballot initiative is likely in 2026 or beyond.

If recreational legalization does eventually arrive in Florida, Sarasota's existing dispensary infrastructure, patient base, and cannabis-friendly culture would position it extremely well for that transition. The buildout happening now — the storefronts, the patient relationships, the brand loyalty — is laying groundwork for what could be a much larger market.

For now, Sarasota's 20,000-plus cardholders have more options, better prices, and more knowledgeable service than ever before. In a county better known for its sunsets and symphony, cannabis has become a quietly mainstream part of daily wellness life.
